He shoots, he scores

I’m sure a few of you will remember a column of mine a few months back titled ‘Not my first mommy mishap’.

In it I told of how my son was down on the football field as I was sitting in the stands clueless.

I went on to tell of a few other instances where I wasn’t exactly wearing my super-mom cape…

And while that football faux pas wasn’t my first mommy mishap, I should have gone ahead and extended the headline to include ‘and not my last’.

That being said, the 8th grade basketball season just wrapped up.

I enjoy basketball and was glad my son decided to play. He claimed he didn’t really want to, but was convinced by the coach.

And me, the dutiful mother that I am, made it to as many games as I could.

I also gave pep talks and encouraged him to take chances and play hard.

Still, he is pretty shy and his performance this season wasn’t exactly actionpacked.

In fact, he pretty much passed the ball back to whoever passed it to him, immediately. Every. Single. Time.

But still I went over to the last game, to show my support .

I saw our pastor and youth minister sitting in the bleacher seats and made my way over to join them. We chatted for a bit and soon they noted Colton was on the court.

I watched but was quickly distracted by a text message. I was typing my quick reply when the crowd made some noise. Especially the pair of pastors. I stopped mid-text and looked up.

Bro. Duane said with a grin, “Colton made a threepointer!”

I’m sure my face looked unconvinced when I said, “No he didn’t.” “Yes, he did.”

We argued back and forth for a few minutes.

I was absolutely sure he was teasing me. Playing a joke.

He promised and even said he would say it from the pulpit! Honestly, that didn’t even make me a believer. It took me quite a few minutes to actually believe him.

But, yeah, it turns out, my son, the kid who didn’t even dribble all season, decided to play the last game.

He even took another shot before the game was over. It didn’t go in, but rolled around the hoop and then out. That time, I was watching .

He’s no Olympian and wasn’t the star of the game, but I couldn’t have been prouder.

Things like this make you realize that sports really can be an excellent tool for teaching real life lessons.

And this lesson wasn’t just for Colton. It was for me too. You gotta take a shot to score. It doesn’t always happen, but one thing is for sure, if you don’t go for it, nothing happens.

Also, stay off the phone when your kid has a game.
