Harriett Smith

Harriett Jane Land Smith (mama) went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2018.  She was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 28, 1932.  Harriett attended Oklahoma State University and then became a Flight Attendant for United Airlines until she met and married her husband Stuart Oliver Smith in 1956.  She had 4 children, Amy, Jennifer, Matt and Dianna.  The family lived in Denver, Colorado, Chicago, Illinois, Foster City, California, Scottsdale, Arizona and Novato, California.  In 2003 Harriet and Stu moved to Texas.

Mama always told us, “just act dumb and you can get away with anything”, however, she was far from dumb.  She loved to read which made her very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. She was very active in Clipped Wings organization, church and loved volunteering at the Crisis Pregnancy center in New Braunfels.  She was definitely the one to call if you were on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”.

She was raised Southern and tried to mold her daughters into Proper Southern ladies, however, if you know any of her daughters, you know she wasn’t very successful. Mom had a quick wit and was an expert at using her beautiful piercing blue eyes to get what she wanted.  She had the ability to say the most outrageous things and get away with it by flashing a smile and playing the most innocent southern belle.  Scarlett O’Hara would have been no match for mama!

Mama loved her children, grandchildren and her great grandchildren and would pray for them, by name, every day.  She was the hero for our entire family.  When the going got tough, she always kept going to make sure we were all taken care of.  Her faith and trust in God saw her through some tough times.  No one will ever fill her shoes.  We will always need her, always love her and always be grateful for the wonderful woman she was-our mother.

She is survived by her son Matthew ‘Matt” Stuart Smith; daughters, Jennifer Lynn Chapman and husband Keith, Amelia Jane Kattan and husband Isaac, Dianna Kay Smith, and Dixie Read, and grandchildren, Lauren Kattan, Luke and Deanna Chapman, Jordan Kattan, Christopher and Lauren Chapman, Rachel Smith, Brandy and Jason Knudson, Matthew Smith, Kirsten and Jason Roach, Ariel and Ciara Kattan, Daniel Kattan, and Leah and Donlin Buckingham. Harriett is also survived by her great grandchildren, Gabriella, Gavin, Gallagher, Callie, Camryn, Manning, Elizabeth, Caroline, Adalyn and Waverly, and her beloved dog Charlie.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart “Stu” Oliver Smith; parents, Harry and Jane (Watson) Land; brother, John Taylor Land, and sister, Helen Dennis.

You win Charlie!

Memorial services will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 515 Zanderson in Jourdanton.
