Happy mid-holiday week

I purchased so many Christmas gifts locally at small businesses and at Vintage in Verdi and Merry on Main from independent artisans. It was so wonderful to be able to tell the story behind the business or artist who helped bring a gift into my loved one’s heart.

We are at that strange and wonderful time of after Christmas but before New Year’s. You want to get out with your family, but do not know what to do. Our favorite mid-holiday family treat is to go to movies together.

Make sure you put the Plestex on your holiday calendar. How amazing is it that we still have a local theater that plays first run movies in the comfiest environment with an affordable and delish snack food stand. It’s fun too to watch movies collectively with your neighbors and friends. There is just something about going to the movies together as a family that is special. I guess it is as simple as you remember that movie as a family memory.

This week the Plestex is showing:

  • Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
  • Migration
  • The Iron Claw
  • Wonka

My pick is The Iron Claw written and directed by Sean Durkin which delves into the history of the Von Erich wrestling family. The movie chronicles the 1980s rise of Texas siblings Kevin (Zac Efron), David (Harris Dickinson) and Kerry (Jeremy Allen White) but also the tragedies that result from trying to live up to the expectations of their father, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany).

I am a huge fan of the 1971 Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder who made his character so iconic. The story was so dear to me because my mom read it to us as children. The film was so magical, mysterious, and witty. The music was beautiful, memorable, and catchy. My favorite song that still transports me to a happy place was “Pure Imagination” written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. This song became a classic and is associated with the enchanting and magical atmosphere of the movie. The movie’s characters are unforgettable, some for their loveliness and others for their awfulness – Grampa Joe, Charlie, Veruca, Augustus, Violet, Cowboy Mike and others. They all contributed to the charm and the moral lessons of the story as they navigate the magical and unpredictable world of Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory. This 2023 Willie Wonka features Timothee Chalamet, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman and Tom Davis all actors I admire and so many more great ones. I will give it a chance. I hope it is as magically memorable as the Gene Wilder version.
