Guy Phillip Phil Wright died peacefully in his sleep early Wednesday morning, February 22, 2017. He had been diagnosed with liver disease in September.
Phil was born to Mack and Marjorie Jo Wright on August 19, 1951, in Three Rivers, Texas. He was raised in Whitsett with his five brothers and a passel of cousins. Mama Jo kept them all fed on fried deer meat, French fries and homemade biscuits. We believe this is how they all got their spunk. Phil graduated from Three Rivers in 1969 and immediately went to work. Through the years, he made many lifelong friends. A ton of memories were created, and the stories live on today. Some things Phil loved were hog shows, The Young and the Restless, Aunt Jackies dressing and Lonesome Dove. Some things he hated were men wearing short pants, Skip Bayless, any town bigger than Campbellton, and the idea of leaving a legacy.
Phil was married to his Munchkin (Jo Ann Wheeler Wright) for many years. Those two were a pair from the beginning when they met in the Fall of 1978. He was blessed with two daughters, Guyanne and Dawsie, and later two sons-in-law, Jerry and Michael. But life really got rich when the grandbabies came on the scene: Janie Claire, Joseph, Sean, Daniel, and Josh. When the grand boys got old enough, their Papa Phil and JoJo got them season tickets for the San Antonio Spurs. Phil even went to a few of the games in his starched jeans and cowboy hat but ended up just watching the game on the big screen from the bar.
Phil retired from Celanese in 2004 and moved to Tilden where he fed a lot of cows and burned a lot of pear. And even though he enjoyed nothing more than sending Munchkin and all the kids on vacation, he preferred to sit in his recliner and watch his jackrabbits. He called them his rabs. An avid NFL fan for his whole life, Dad stayed up and watched the amazing ending to this years Super Bowl. We hashed it all over the next day on the phone.
Phil lost three of his brothers way too soon – Greg, Junior, and Timmy. His dad, our Papa, passed away in 1984; and our beloved Mama Jo went to heaven in March of 2007. His remaining brothers, Joe Gary (Joancelle) and Jimmy (Teresa) have stayed close with him and visited by phone most days. He had many nephews and nieces and enjoyed entertaining them all.
Phil was loved by many, and his family will miss him greatly. He made our lives more colorful. He called everyday to ask what we were having for supper, then he would tell us what was wrong with our choice. We love him and feel very blessed to call him ours.
Dad loved the commercial for St. Judes Childrens Hospital. He had a very tender heart. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to that organization.
