Gudelio Martinez, also known as Leo or Lelo, passed away on March 29, 2019 at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio. He was born in Leming to Jesus Martinez and Sylvestra Aguero.
Leo grew up with his parents and two younger brothers Gilbert and Andrew in Poteet. He was drafted by the United States Army and graduated with his GED while enlisted. After serving in the armed forces, he became a truck driver and hauled various crops to market until his retirement. He married Guadalupe Nieto, who preceded him in death, and raised his family of two daughters, Blanca and Sonya, in Poteet. Lelo enjoyed spending most of his time at his ranch with his roosters, growing crops, and landscaping. He had a talent for wood working and carpentry as well as arguing with anyone who would listen. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Leo is survived by his daughters Blanca Lugo and Sonya Bermea; his grandchildren Connie Bostel and husband Chadd, Elizabeth Lugo, Amber Bermea and husband Billy, and Jessica Bermea; his great-grandchildren Jose Luis, Acilena, Payton, Juanito, Jesus, Angelo, and Abelina; his brothers Gilbert and wife Aneita, Andrew and wife Diana; his nephews Michael and Mason; his nieces Sarah, Angela, and Mandy; and numerous cousins and extended family.
Lelo was preceded in death by his parents Jesus and Sylvestra; brother Gonzalo; and wife Lupe.
A funeral service will be held at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Poteet on Thursday, April 4. Visitation will begin at noon with a rosary at 2 p.m. followed by a mass at 3 p.m. A gathering with refreshments will take place immediately after mass at the St. Philip’s Hall located behind the church.
