Grid picks end for the season

With the end of state playoffs for all inner Atascosa County teams, Grid Picks is finished for the season. I would like to discuss the Pleasanton Eagle season that ended up 5-5.

To begin with, PHS began the season with only 4 offensive and 4 defensive starters from 2017. While these minimal numbers presented a situation of additional starters growing into the system, nonetheless, younger gridders were gaining game-time experience weekly.

After winning their first five games, they ended up on the loss side in five subsequent games. There was a lot of growth in those last five meetings, with the Eagles ahead or near-winning near the end. Results were just a ‘matter of luck’ not going their way. Some of the losses came within one play near the end going their way – that just didn’t happen. I believe the Eagles came out of this season with more maturity and growth with many available starters to make a good run in District 15- 4A I next year.

“It comes down to 2-3 plays in each of the games we lost this season,” said Pleasanton Coach Stephen Liska. If we make those plays we probably win those games. There were some momentum swings that just didn’t go our way, sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.”

Pleasanton starters returning on offense: WR/ DB- Dalton Hobbs-Jr, Slot- Nathaniel Acevedo- Jr, RB/ DB- Daniel Valadez- Jr, WR/FS- Cole Wiechring- Soph, OL/DL- Andrew Orta- Soph, RB/LB-Joel Arevalo- Freshman.

Starters returning on defense: LB/FB Cass Campbell- Jr, DL/OL Louis Arguijo Jr, FS/RB Jose DeLaCruz- Jr, CB/WRAshon Thompson- Soph.

In Grid Picks for the second round of state playoffs, there were 19 correct picks out of 20 playoff games. That ends 2018 pickin’ season with 227 correct picks out of 260 games to end the season with an 87% picking average. There were two picks that were a point from the prediction. Liberty Hill was given 27 over Gonzales and won, 56-28, while Navarro was picked by 7 over Raymondville and won, 35-27.
