Grand indeed

I’ve had something my whole life that most people don’t have. All four of my grandparents.

My
maternal grandmother, Maria Cruz Garza, is an exceptionally strong
woman. She is the heart and soul of so many. As a child I used to love
to go over to her house and watch her sew. I remember once writing her a
poem with the letters of the word Grandma and she later wrote one using
my name. I still have it. It’s kept well in one of my keepsake books.
This woman is full of knowledge and more wise words than anyone I’ve
ever known.

My
maternal grandfather, Juan Jose Garza, has the best sense of humor
ever. Especially for a man of 92 years. I can remember him always joking
and playing tricks. He used to have a dog named Blackie when I was a
kid and when we would go over and knock on the door he would say, “Shoo,
get away Blackie!” just to pick on us. Making us think that he thought
we were the dog. It always made me laugh. Just last week I went over to
his house with my aunt. When we came up to the house my grandfather was
sitting on the white rocking chair that sits on their porch looking like
he was on his third dream. My aunt approached him reaching to touch his
arm when he “woke” startled from sleep saying, “Shooo, kitty!” We
laughed and he grinned us.

My
paternal grandmother, Mary Helen Guerrero, is a woman full of spunk and
fashion sense. I’ve never been much on fashion, but I always can
remember my grandmother wearing sparkling clothes and looking her best
with beautiful makeup and hair. She was of course a beautician. She ran a
beauty shop out of her house. I can remember going to get our hair cut
and her letting us sit in the dryer chair and reading magazines as if we
were true women of the salon.

My
paternal grandfather, Fred Guerrero, used to dance with me. My
grandmother used to have a jukebox which played lots of good songs. He
used to have to really try to get us to dance, but we would eventually.
In fact I think it’s on video somewhere. He always smiles. And although
he hasn’t been able to remember exactly who I am for many years, he
always makes me feel loved.

Keep the memories of your grandparents in your heart and keep them even closer.
