The Jourdanton Squaws suffered their first loss of the new season in a 54-42 result against the Gonzales Lady Apaches on Monday.

Jourdanton (2-1) only led once in the game after Vanessa Vacca drained a threepointer to put the Squaws up 5-4 with 4:43 left in the first quarter. From there, Gonzales went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-5 lead with their final four points of the run coming off steals.

A pair of layups by Emma Dorroh and a free throw by Shyanne Bauerle kept the Squaws within range, down 13-10 at the end of the first quarter.

But the Squaws went cold in the second quarter. Gonzales went on an 11-2 run to stretch their lead to 11 points thanks to six points by Gonzales’ 6-foot- 1 senior Devon Williams in that stretch. Gonzales maintained that margin for a 31-20 lead at the break.

Williams would finish as the game’s leading scorer with 31 points to her name.

Gonzales’ lead would grow to as many as 17 points midway through the third quarter. The Squaws finished the third quarter on a 7-2 run after field goals from Vacca, Mia Lopez and McKinley West, which trimmed the deficit to 46-33 after the third.
