The Importance of Midterm Elections

On to November! Congressional midterm elections are around the corner taking place between Presidential elections. Members of the House of Representatives are elected every two years while members of the United States Senate serve overlapping six-year terms. One third of all of the U.S. Senators are up for re-election in 2018. In Texas, we have many important races on the November ballot including Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. We do have a few locally contested races and the Republican Party is supporting Lynn Ellison for 81st District Judge, Mark Gillespie for County Commissioner, Precinct #1, Stuart Knowlton for County Commissioner, Precinct #2, Kyle Bradley for JP, Precinct #2 and Roan West for JP, Precinct #3.

Many of us have heard that the midterm elections are very important, but why is this? The Congressional midterm elections determine which party, Republican or Democrat, will control each chamber of Congress for the next two years. The Party in control of the chamber, either the House or the Senate, is more likely to get its proposed legislation passed in that chamber.

A Republican majority in the Senate and the House will continue to allow President Trump to work on our behalf. If the Republicans prevail we will continue to see job growth, a booming economy, the continued reinforcement of our military, ongoing improvements for our veterans, better trade deals, better foreign diplomacy, continued reduction in the size of government, continued tax relief, ongoing appointments of constitutionally conservative judges and perhaps another appointment to the Supreme Court. All of these opportunities will provide a more secure future for our children and grandchildren.

I have read many places that some dislike the President’s rhetoric. I had the opportunity to attend a meeting where the featured speaker was Jeffrey Addicott, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary’s University. Professor Addicott is the foremost authority on terrorism and radical Islam. He told the group that we should listen to our President with our eyes; watch what he is doing. He is making our country safer, more prosperous and giving our citizens jobs and opportunities.

Further, electing Republicans to statewide offices will allow our input for redistricting coming in 2020 that will last until 2030! There is a lot at stake in November! The Party does make a difference! Vote Republican!
