Rain or shine, 500 plus vegetable plant starts, including green beans, yellow squash, peppers and tomatoes, will be given away at the fourth “Great Poteet Plant Giveaway” on Saturday, March 23 beginning at 9 a.m. Plants are available to everyone at no cost living in or near Poteet, Jourdanton and Pleasanton.
Poteet’s Shalom Ministerial Alliance churches participated in planting day in February and members of First United Methodist Church in Poteet have watered and cared for the plants. First UMC’s Wesley Nurse, RN Wendy Hilburn, and the church’s Health and Wellness Committee sponsor the giveaway each year. Additional support comes from Lowe’s Market in Poteet on Highway 16 and Methodist Healthcare Ministries.
“Our goal each year is to serve as a support resource for families to grow healthy food to eat through the summer months,” said FUMC’s pastor, Rev. Dave Collett. “The past two springs we’ve worked with third graders at Poteet Elementary School in a ‘hands on’ planting about how to grow vegetables at home. I’m also really pleased that a community garden has gotten started in Poteet and a children’s garden project is beginning at the Poteet Library. It’s a great thing when City of Poteet leaders and community members can work together on projects that puts a focus on health and wellness for all ages.”
Each car in line on Saturday will receive several plants on a first come first served basis until all plants are distributed. Last year plants were all distributed before noon. As we expect another good turnout this year, vehicles may begin lining up at 8:30 a.m. at the front of the church along Fourth Street at Avenue G.
