Hebrews 10:24 – And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.
It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the temperature is dropping, the mountains are snowcapped, and Texas wakes up to winter in the morning, Spring in the afternoon and Fall in the evenings.
Nevertheless, it’s Fall, and that means it’s time to start cooking those favorite fall foods. And if you are anything like me, there is nothing better than walking into the kitchen on a cool fall day and smelling a good ole pot of chili on the stove. With one whiff my senses are awakened and my mouth begins to water. Like a shark circling its prey, I begin to pace the floor in anticipation for the roller coaster of flavor that I know is about to reach my taste buds.
I can hardly wait until it’s time to fill my bowl, dip my spoon in, and take a great big bite. And again, if you are anything like me it is almost instinct to remove the lid, take stirring spoon, and stir the pot. Immediately releasing that mouthwatering aroma and flavor that awaits me.
I can remember growing up as a child having this very same excitement about chili cooking season. The weather would begin to drop, the days and nights became cooler and cooler and my dad could hardly wait until that first pot of chili hit the stovetop. It was prime chili cooking weather.
I remember that he would get so excited about it that I too couldn’t help but get excited about cooking chili. Even though at the time I didn’t even really like chili all that much. But there was just something about his getting excited that would in turn excite us and make us happy as well. Oh how we loved gathering around the table to enjoy those family dinners.
In the book of Hebrews we are taught that just like stirring up that pot of chili and releasing its pleasing aroma, that when we as children of God take time to consider one another that we too will stir up the pleasing aroma of love and good works. And just like we all got excited because of dad’s love for chili, we too get excited when we share our enthusiasm and willingness to do God’s will and spend time with those of like precious faith. What a blessed time it is when we come together as Christians and children of God. We lift each other up in song, in prayer, in study, and in fellowship. As we go on our daily walk, may we all continue to lift each other up by stirring up in each other the perfect love of God. That sweet aroma that brings us all together to both worship and praise His Holy name.
