The Poteet Strawberry Growers Association usually picks one of its current members to honor as the Grower of the Year; however, this year local producers decided to honor two of their own who passed away recently. Each of the two growers being honored this year left a legacy on the rich strawberry field soil that is steeped in history, honor and dedication. The honorees include Dolores “Lole” Garcia Jr., right, and Manuel Gutierrez Sr., left.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new McDonald’s were held Saturday. On hand were, from left, Pleasanton City Secretary Kathy McMullen, Msgr. John Wagner, Pleasanton council members Abraham Saenz Jr., Johnny Bosquez and Dorothy Haverlah; Chamber of Commerce president Buddy Bingham; Pleasanton City Manager Larry Pippen; Jourdanton councilman Tommy Hon, Jourdanton Mayor Ed McClure; and McDonald’s owner/operator Mike Munoz.

Channel 5 Newsman Gary DeLaune and cameraman Rex Stanley were in Pleasanton recently to film a story on two Pleasanton High School students – Brenda Lawhon and Barbara Garcia. These fellows were quite impressed with how these young ladies have overcome physical handicaps and become outstanding Pleasanton High School students. (Barbara is blind, and a bone condition keeps Brenda confined to a special wheelchair.)
