National Weather Service honored Henry Netardus recently for his 30 years of service as a Cooperative Observer and collecting daily rainfall information.

Tri-City Community Hospital honored their employees and Airlife recently with an early morning breakfast. Airlife gave rides to several of the hospital staff members. Pleasanton High School’s 1998 Fall Production will be Steel Magnolias. The cast includes (left to right) Jennifer Ruiz as Claire, Sara Cain as Truvy, Crystal Bosquez as M’Lynn and Amber Beck as Ouiser. The 4-H Citizenship team is gearing up for the “Save the Battleship Texas” can collection campaign. They will be asking their neighbors to save aluminum cans to help fund the restoration project of saving the only remaining battleship that served in two world wars. Can campaign workers include, left to right,  sitting, Jeremy Barnett, Tara Barnett, Jessica Andrews and Lance Ferguson. Kneeling, Nacona Turner, secretary; Nicole Stewart, treasurer; Margie Stewart. Poteet Junior Girl Scouts Troop #497 had fun at the morning performance of the Shriner’s Circus on Saturday, Oct. 22. Lunch was served picnic style at Pletz Park in San Antonio where they ate and played games. Included in the group are, left to right, front row, Angela O’Conner, JoMarie Aguilar and Angel Vasquez. These three PHS students, Becky Katschmorak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Katschmorak; Oscar Korus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Korus and Wanda Meyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Meyer Jr., gave highlights of their “Citizenship Seminar” they attended last summer in Waco. They spoke last week at the annual meeting of the Atascosa County Farm Bureau.

 

Pleasanton Assistant Postmaster Robert A. Benitez and Postmaster Bill Ruark present D.L. (Mac) McDonald with a fine rod and reel, a gift from fellow employees. Mac is retiring from the postal service after 30 years. Mac stated he’s going to just fish, play golf and take it easy.

House-to-house mail delivery was initiated here Saturday. Here Pleasanton’s two city carriers, Donald McDonald, left and Joe Elliott look over part of the first mail that has been stacked in McDonald’s car for delivery.

 

60 years ago

Samuel (Sammy) Shearrer of Shearrer’s Shopping Center displays nearly 8 pounds of sweet potatoes. That’s a small part of potatoes being harvested from the truck farm of his father, Raymond Shearrer. The sweet potatoes being harvested from a 40-acre field are averaging 375 bushels to the acre with 175 bushels of this figure being No. 1’s.
