60 Years

Mr. and Mrs. Riley LaGrange have opened what was Ellison’s Drive- Inn in North Pleasanton. They’re newly-weds. She formerly was Mrs. Lucille Hall of Mathis and they were married on August 3 in Jourdanton. Riley has renamed the drive-inn and now calls it “Riley’s Place.” His home is Beeville but he has a wide acquaintance among oil field workers and truck drivers all over the South Texas area.

Open house for the new Pleasanton Hospital and Clinic has been set for Sunday, Aug. 28, from 3-6 p.m. The hospital will not be in operation at the time, according to Dr. J.M. Faggard of Poteet and Dr. John D. Austin of Pleasanton, its owners. “It would be almost impossible to hold an open house when the hospital has patients,” Dr. Austin explained. “That’s the reason that we’re holding open house before actually opening the hospital.”

50 Years ago-

Charlotte’s new rodeo arena has been selected as the site for the 25th birthday party of the Atascosa Soil Conservation district which will be held on Sept. 23. Gov. John Connally is scheduled to be the featured speaker at the anniversary celebration when the original district supervisors will be recognized along with other persons who have contributed to the growth of soil conservation during the past 25

years. The Governor has verbally accepted an informal invitation to speak and a formal request that he attend is expected to be made this week.

A man arrested while driving a stolen pickup here has been charged with murder in Alexandria, La. He is Joseph James, Jr., who was taken into custody by Highway Patrolman Joe Murphy several weeks ago and later returned to Lousiana. In a letter to Sheriff H.H. Coward’s office, a Rapides Parish deputy sheriff reported that James is accused of robbing a service station of $28 and slugging the attendant before stealing the pickup.

40 Years ago-

Three big dances play an important part in Pleasanton’s Cowboy Homecoming celebrations. Again this year, Bobbie and Henry Shearrer, who are in charge of the dances, have lined up some top musicians for the street dances. Thursday night, August 22, The Moods will be performing. On Friday, it will be The Abbey, and then Saturday the featured dance with Nashville recording stars Jack Greene and Jeannie Seely.

Art show viewers are going to have a double opportunity to win a door prize this year. A painting has been donated by Art Club member Nell Holder of Pleasanton. It is a 10×10 inch oil painting entitled “Kumquat Still Life.” Also

the Bicentennial Cookbook Committee has donated a complete set of the prints used in the Brush Country Kitchen Cookbook. There is no admission charge of any kind, to attend the show. Each art show guest has an opportunity to win one of the door prizes by simply registering their name and address while the art show is open.

30 Years ago-

Pleasanton School Board Tuesday denied an appeal by one of the district’s teachers to a decision of the Pleasanton Career Ladder Committee. Gary Wallace and Darleen Cox, Texas State Teachers Association representative, presented Wallace’s evidence the board decided to abide by the decision of the Career Ladder Committee to deny Wallace access to what amounts to a reward system for teachers judged to be “outstanding in the classroom.” The board could have rescinded the Career Ladder Committee’s decision only if it felt that committee members made that decision “arbitrarily or capriciously.”

20 Years ago-

Atascosa County Troupe (ACT), in cooperation with the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming, is proud to announce the performance times for their production of “Tumbleweeds,” a musical comedy based on the popular cartoon strip seen

in Sunday papers and daily metropolitan newspapers.

State Health Department helicopters began dropping vaccine for coyotes on Monday. Some 850,000 bait cubes of vaccine were dropped in February over a 60-mile wide band across South Texas and were based out of Pleasanton’s Municipal Airport.

10 Years ago-

Big things are expected in the Strawberry City and this time, it doesn’t involve one of the largest festivals in the state of Texas. What everyone is talking about is football and the Poteet Aggies proved that they are ready for just about anyone. Proving Saturday that they mean business, the loaded Aggies punished the

John F. Kennedy Rockets Saturday in a controlled scrimmage, scoring not once, not twice, but seven times.
