60 Years ago-

Henry Howell, noted San Antonio newscaster, will be the principal speaker when the Pleasanton and North Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce holds its annual farm-ranch barbecue here next Thursday night. The barbecue will be held in the old courtyard at 7:30 o’clock. Farmers and ranchers of the area will be guests of the C of C members. Howell, well known for his farm-ranch broadcasts, was invited by Charlie Troell.

Fire did an estimated $150 to $200 in damage to the CPL office in Jourdanton about 7 o’clock Monday evening. The cause: a hot ground wire. And it’s embarrassed CPL manager Jim Wittler to no end. Jourdanton firemen including Jim’s campadre Jimmy Jendry are offering to buy him a book on electric wiring. One side of the CPL office is woodthe rest of the building is brick and tile. Apparently a conduit shorted out against a metal lath.

50 Years ago-

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Collamore, owners of Earl’s Bakery, have purchased the building formerly occupied by Dan’s Recreation Hall on Hunt Street, across from Ricks Co. Purchase was made from Dan McKenzie. The Collamores are in the process of remodeling the building and moving their bakery into the new location. Earl says the new location will add about 500 square feet to his store space and will give his customers the advantage of considerably more parking area.

Reservists assigned to Pleasanton’s Battery B, 4th Howitzer Battalion of the 15th Artillery, rolled in Saturday after finishing two weeks of rigorous, hot-weather training at North Fort Hood as components of the 90th division. The 90th, with 6,300 men, had its strength bolstered for the encampment as 1,400 reservists from other units in Texas, New Mexico and Arkansas held their summer training programs in conjunction with the 90th.

40 Years ago-

Among the rubble left in the wake of a Sunday morning fire that hit the law office of Strauss and Haverlah Attorneys, is a sign that reads, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Standing amid the charred and water soaked debris just hours after the fire was extinguished, Olin B. Strauss said optimistically of the quote, “It’ll get better.”

The fire, as yet of unknown origin, was reported at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, August 18. When firemen reached the 111 E. Johnson Street address (next door to Leon theatre), they found smoke seeping all around the roofline of the building. Fire Marshall Tom Bruns, who is investigating the possibility of arson, said the windowless building was difficult to enter because of the smoke build up.

Trustees of Pleasanton Independent School district appointed Charles Valenta to succeed Jerry Akers, who resigned his trustee position Aug. 13. Akers, a sales representative for Moormen Feeds, has been transferred to Gonzales. Valenta, a certified public accountant, was a runner-up for the post in the recent school board election.

30 Years ago-

The Jourdanton Indians, with a total of 73 players on three different squads, will travel to Lytle Friday, August 24, for their first scrimmage of the 1984 football season. The freshmen team, a first this year for the Jourdanton program will begin play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the JV, and the varsity getting underway at about 7:30 p.m.

20 Years ago-

Alberto Puente, a former “Gallop” winner, and Landra Fowler, a newcomer were the overall winners in the Pleasanton Homecoming’s 5-kilometer race held Saturday morning at the River Park. Ninety-three runners, plus 22 walkers in the two mile Fun Walk participated in the two morning events. “All in all I think everything went on pretty smoothly,” said Pleasanton Express editor David Wilkerson.

Dennis Jones and Road closed, a local country and western band rapidly gaining a following in South Texas, will be featured during the 29th annual 1994 Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming when it is staged August 19-20. Jones, who is associated with Wehman Inc. in Pleasanton is currently serving as president of the Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming Association.

10 Years ago-

It looks like the race for the first half championship of the Tri- City Shooters 8-Ball Association’s Summer- Fall League is going down to the wire. After the Wednesday, Aug. 1 matches were completed and only two weeks remained in the first half, the standings among the top two teams stayed the same-with the Los Amigos (104-58) holding a slim one-game lead over the Gamecocks (103-59).

In July, Lyneigh Perez of Poteet participated in the North Texas Buckskin Brigade at the Stasney’s Cook Ranch in Albany. Here she joined thirty other high school students from across the state to take part in the Texas Brigades-a series of award winning leadership development programs.
