Shepp Schiefelbein, 7 years old of Calallen is in second grade at Calallen Elementary. He is the son of Rudy and Abby Schiefelbein and brother of Bowen Schiefelbein and loves to hunt. They decided to take advantage of the cooler weather Sunday afternoon, Nov. 15. Shepp’s brother tagged along with them. Their property is off FM 16 and FM 140 just south of Jourdanton. They climbed in the blind around 3:45 p.m. and the trophy buck showed up around 4:30 p.m. Shepp settled in with his Winchester .243 all on his own and pulled the trigger with the buck standing around 150 yards down the sendero. After he shot, the buck ran and Shepp instantly told his dad he thought he missed because he was so nervous. They waited about 15 minutes, but his dad could not keep him from heading down to the area where the buck was. They found signs of blood about 10 yards from the area and the tracking was on. After about a 300-yard trail, Dad finally found the deer. Shepp couldn’t have been more excited. The buck was a 12-point and field dressed around 185 lbs., but Dad said it felt more like 250 after dragging him out.
