Filing for May elections officially opens today

Candidates for the upcoming municipal and school board elections that will be held on Saturday, May 9, can begin to file today.

According to the Secretary of State website, the first day to file for a place on the ballot cannot be filed earlier than the 30th day before the filing deadline, February 27, 2015.

The City of Pleasanton, will be holding an election for certain, while Pleasanton ISD, the City of Poteet and Poteet ISD may have elections if opponents file.

City of Pleasanton

There are three seats to be filled due to term limits. J.R. Gallegos, District 4, Roger Garza, District 5 and Jeanne Israel, District 6.

It is also time for a mayoral election. The current mayor is Clint Powell.

Pleasanton ISD

School trustees will see an election if candidates file to contest the current members.

The two appointed trustees will face the ballot if contested. They are Edward Zamarippa, District 2 and Joseph Warnken, District 6. Up for re-election (if they file) are Danny Brown, District 4; Jamie Downs, District 5 and Ami Powell, District 7.

City of Poteet

The mayor’s seat is due for election. Currently Larry Cantu holds that office.

Vanessa Saylor, Place 4 and Denise Sanchez, Place 5 will both be on the ballot if they choose to file.

These and other candidates have until February 27 to file for office.
