Father/son dispute results in homicideFree Access


Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward reported Sunday that his office is investigating a murder resulting from a shooting Friday afternoon in the Woodland Hills Subdivision,  six miles north of Poteet.

On Friday, May 31 Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call about shots fired in the subdivision. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, 38-year-old Abel Esquivel with a gunshot wound in the back of the head. The suspect was the victim’s father, 63-year-old Abel Esquivel. Deputies learned the two were in a dispute about money when the father shot his son in the back of the head. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in San Antonio where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Esquivel was arrested by ACSO for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on Friday afternoon then for Murder on Saturday.

Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 Felix Herrera set Esquivel’s bond to $500,000.

ACSO Sgt. Jesse Martinez is leading the case.
