Two vehicles collided around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14 on Farm to Market 476 between Downey Drive and Oak Valley Drive.

Xavier Florez Sr. was driving his black Ford Mustang on FM 476, heading back home to Jourdanton after turning left from Haverlah Road (close to Coastal Bend College). His 15-year-old son, Xavier Florez Jr. was riding with him. Kevin Free, in a red Ford Ranger, was also driving on FM 476 towards Poteet, following the gradual right hand curve of the road near the entrance of Pleasanton Primary School.

The Ranger took the curve too wide, entering the Mustang’s path. The vehicles then collided, corner to corner. The impact crushed the driver’s side of the Mustang, knocking it into the shoulder. The Ranger rolled over onto its hood a few feet away.

Juan Florez, Xavier Florez Sr.’s father said his grandson escaped the wreck to get help. He was not injured.

Air-life landed in the lot in front of Pleasanton Primary shortly after the crash and took Mr. Free to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Xavier Florez Sr. succumbed to his injuries before EMS arrived. First Baptist Church in Pleasanton held visitation and funeral services for Xavier on Sunday and Monday.
