The first day of May turned out to be a great day for the first Royal Farmer’s Market of the year. Shoppers looking for unique, handmade finds had so much to choose from on Saturday. Vendors offered handbags, zipper pouches, keychains, jewelry and scrunchies—which, by the way, are back in style. The kids got to make their own clay animals at Darla Royal’s Kids’ Corner.

There were also bath salts and beard balms and delicious edible treats including fresh squash, coffees, jellies, breads, cookies, pretzels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, honey and so much more.

The temperature was perfect and was accompanied by a nice breeze. Canopies covered the ten vendor areas in case of rain, which didn’t show up until right at the end of the sale.

Organized by Gabriela Royal, the event is about more than just the items you take home. It is an experience, an opportunity to reconnect with friends and get to know some new people.

“During the week most of us are very busy with people taking care of business and family,” said Royal. “Being able to slow down and connect in good conversation has been so nice. I love looking around and seeing people as they connect with others as well. It’s become my favorite thing!”

Several vendors made the decision to hold off on participating this week due to the weather, so you can expect to see more vendors and more variety of homegrown vegetables at future markets.

Located at 901 and 903 W. Goodwin St., right on the corner, the Royal Farmer’s Market is easy to find. Make plans to stop by between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. any Saturday, now through July.
