Winning five awards, round table discussions, an Astros game at Minute Maid Park and connecting with colleagues were some of the highlights at the Texas Press Association summer convention held in Houston June 20-22.

The Pleasanton Express won a 2nd place, two 3rd place and two 4th place awards at the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest competing in Large Weeklies Division. This year, 148 newspapers participated in the contest submitting 1,505 entries. There were 10 divisions dividing the newspapers according to their size.

Placing second place for their special section in the Blue Moon Division, “Cowboy Tales”, the judge commented “I’d like to see the photos accompany the individual summaries of the Cowboys of the Year. And perhaps a little too much gray area throughout, but a very large, powerful section. It’s a keepsake for sure.”

Third place in General Excellence was also awarded. The judge said, “Good layout and coverage. Nicely done!”

Also receiving third place were the entries for Advertising featuring the ads for Atascosa Dental Center’s “Don’t hide your smile”; Virginia Twins’ “Pumpkin Patch” and Culligan’s “Is your water fracked up?” The judge commented that “they all effectively used photography to represent the client/service of the ad.”

Fourth place was awarded in the Page Design category with this comment by the judge “Great front page.” The front page featured the story of WWII veteran Margarito C. Peña and was designed by David Wickersham.

Also receiving fourth place was Lisa Luna’s feature stories on Rebekah Florez and Marcelino Anguiano. The judge offered these comments

“The reunion article was powerful as the veterans told of their experience in Vietnam. Although the reader gets a complete and well-presented picture of Reba, the article needed more about her cancer and how she and her family coped with it.”
