The Pleasanton Express brought home four awards from the states largest convention, Texas Press Association (TPA) Leadership Retreat held in Ruidoso, N.M. June 15-17.
Second Place was awarded in the News Photo Division to Jack Garcia, Robbie Hamby, Erika Vela and J Garcia. The photos were very eye-grabbing, said the judge from the Louisiana Press Association.
The Pleasanton Express also took home third place in the following categories Sports Photo, Blue Moon Special Section (Law Enforcement) and Headline Writing.
Regarding Sports photos the Louisiana Press Association judge commented, Stephen Garcia, Cameron Thompson and J Garcia combined their knowledge of sports, talent for composition and victory (mostly) and the agony of a players injury in a contested championship basketball game. From a soaring backward high jump to an underdogs celebration of an upset victory from a football aerial attack these are informative, energetic and fun images.
Over the past three months, the Pleasanton Express has won a total of 20 awards by bringing home nine awards from STPA in April and seven in May from the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association.
This year 143 newspapers submitted 1,410 entries in the Texas Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by TPA. The contest is broken down into 10 divisions in which Texas newspapers compete against papers of similar circulation size.
