Esther Fairless

Esther Elizabeth Chaney Fairless passed away peacefully at her home in Pleasanton, Texas on June 18, 2017. She was 94 years and 9 months of age. Esther was born in Sutherland Springs, Texas in 1922 to Benjamin Burleson Chaney and Martha Cornelia Leigh Chaney. She graduated from Sutherland Springs High School and attended Trinity University. During World War II Esther held a civil service position at Fort Sam Houston. In 1949 she married Charlton Augustus Fairless, whose Navy career kept them traveling until his retirement in 1961, when they settled in Corpus Christi. Esther returned to civil service after moving to Corpus Christi, and retired from ARADMAC in 1980. During their years in Corpus Christi, Esther was active in First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and Girls Auxiliary.

In 1984 Esther and Charlton moved to Pleasanton, Texas. Their home in Pleasanton has been the source of many happy memories for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren over the years. Esther unselfishly volunteered her time in many capacities. She was a teacher of English as a second language as well as adult literacy. She volunteered at Second Harvest for many years, and acted as church librarian at First Baptist Church of Pleasanton. Esther and Charlton enjoyed traveling, and after Charlton’s death in 1986 Esther traveled with friends who dubbed themselves “The Merry Widows.” Their journeys included many places in the United States as well as a trip to Costa Rica.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Charlton, her parents and two brothers and their spouses, Jack and Jane Chaney and D.L. and Lily Chaney. She leaves behind three children and their spouses: Steven Fairless and wife Lorna of North Stonington, CT; Mona Parish and husband Jeff of Houston; Lisa Mallia and husband Mike of Corpus Christi. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ben Fairless, Terry Murphy and Leah, Layne Craig and Matt, Justin Parish and Melissa, Mikey Mallia and Ashley, Colleen DuPont and Reggie; and Charlotte Jo Mallia. Esther’s great grandchildren brought her great joy: Bradley, Toby, Shawn and Kali Mallia; Maddie, Eleora and Loretta DuPont; Allis and James Craig, Avery Parish, and Aiden Murphy.
