Escaped convict recaptured

The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office was notified last Friday by the State Board of Pardon and Parole that a convicted registered sex offender living in Atascosa County had absconded.

Parole Board officials notified Jail Captain Martin Gonzales and Chief Deputy Cregg Thompson early Friday that Julian Maldonado Sr., had cut off his ankle monitor and fled his Primrose Subdivision home, 7 miles north of Poteet. Gonzales and Thompson monitor sex offenders who are required to register with law enforcement if living in Atascosa County.

A state arrest warrant for Parole Violation was issued and the sheriff’s office put out an area wide alert for the 44 year old convicted felon. Sheriff David Soward turned to social media and featured Maldonado on the sheriff’s office Facebook Page Saturday morning.

The “be on the lookout” was picked up by San Antonio TV media as well. In less than 13 hours Maldonado was arrested by San Antonio Police on the west side. He’s currently in the Bexar County Jail being held without bond on the parole violation warrant.
