Election filings: some confusion and one seat empty

The May 9 elections for both Pleasanton and Poteet had some last minute filings on Friday, February 27. One seat has no candidate and another may not be eligible.

Pleasanton ISD

The following trustees have filed for re-election: Edward Zamarippa, District 2; Jamie Downs, District 5; Joseph Warnken, District 6 and Ami Powell, District 7.

Also filing for District 7 is Peter J. Pawelek.

District 4 did not have a candidate to file. After the votes are canvassed, someone will likely be appointed.

Also on the ballot will be a $63 million bond to build a new elementary school and to upgrade and improve the other campuses.

City of Pleasanton

There are three seats to be filled due to term limits. J.R. Gallegos, District 4, Roger Garza, District 5 and Jeanne Israel, District 6.

Mayor Clint Powell has filed and did not draw an opponent.

Eliseo Flores filed for District 4, Robert Earl Wood filed for District 5 as well as Roger Garza. Travis Hall has filed for District 6 council’s place.

Garza, current councilman for District 5 questioned the meaning of the charter on term limits and felt that he is able to be on the ballot.

The City Charter states in Article 14,Section 5. Terms of Office

“All elective officers, under this Charter, shall serve a term of two (2) years and until their successors have been elected and qualified. There shall be a limit of three (3) consecutive two-year terms served, with no person to serve more than six total two-year terms as a Councilmember or Mayor. This provision takes effect with the May, 2009 election and applies to anyone serving in office from that time forward. A person may be elected to serve up to six (6) terms as Councilmember and up to another six (6) terms as Mayor.”

He is currently in his third consecutive term. Garza has until 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 4 to withdraw his application.

There will also be four revisions to the City Charter on the ballot.

Article IV, Section 5 Terms of Office (Change term of office from 2 years to 3 years and reduce maximum number of terms).

Article IV, Section 7. Compensation (Change amounts of compensation of councilmembers and mayor).

Article XVI, Section 1. Director of Finance: Powers and Duties. Add subparagraph “I. As directed by the City Manager, the Finance Director shall assist the City Manager in carrying out the financial duties called out in this Article.”

Article XVI, Section 8. Contracts for City Improvements- (Increase dollar amount from $5,000 to $25,000).

City of Poteet

Filing for the mayor’s office is incumbent Larry Cantu and opponent Richard Tuttle Sr.

Rick Flores and Rosalinda De La Fuente have filed for Place 4 and Denise Sanchez and Vanessa Saylor have both filed for Place 5.

Poteet ISD

Incumbent Henry S. Ortiz and Bernardo J. Aguilar have filed for Place 3; Steven C. Estrada and Jo Marie Aguilar Cervantez have filed for Place 4.

Yvette Navarro, Pete Ochoa Jr. and Hector Vessi have filed for Place 5.
