Eagles stumble in non-district finale

The Pleasanton Eagles hit a speed bump ahead of district play by splitting their final two non-district games.

The Eagles opened last week by beating Fox Tech 74-47 on Tuesday, Jan. 5, before falling to Brooks Academy 69-61 on Friday, Jan. 8.

In Tuesday’s win, the Eagles shot 42% from the field. They went on a 15-6 run in the second quarter to take a 33-19 lead at halftime. They would outscore Fox Tech 28-18 in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Layne Dowdy led the way in scoring for Pleasanton on Tuesday with 16 points. RJ Marquez was the only other Eagle in double figures with 12 points.

In Friday’s loss, Pleasanton shot 32% from the field compared to Brooks Academy’s 46%. The Eagles trailed 36-25 at halftime. They would trim the deficit to 50-43 entering the fourth quarter before the Bengals narrowly outscored them 19-18 in the final frame.

Marquez scored 16 points for the Eagles to lead the team on Friday. Jake Casias had 11 for Pleasanton, as well.

The Eagles’ district opener with Navarro on Tuesday was postponed to a date yet to be announced. They will travel to Gonzales on Jan. 19.
