Eagles overcome bad opening quarter to top Hondo

JOURDANTON—An old sports adage proved true Tuesday for the Pleasanton boys basketball team. Luckily for the Eagles, it is not how they started, but how they finished.
Despite trailing 15-4 after the first eight minutes, Pleasanton came back to edge Hondo 56-53 in the teams’ opening game of the Jourdanton Holiday Hoops Classic. A 22-2 second quarter got the Eagles on track, and Pleasanton held off a barrage of 3-pointers by the Owls to hold on for the victory.
“I think it was the holidays, in my opinion,” Eagles coach Ricardo Marquez said of his team’s opening quarter. “We just started off slow. We need to get back into the groove of things and get a routine. Once we get our set routine [again] I think we’ll be all right.”
Pleasanton led 42-35 heading into the final quarter before Hondo cut into the deficit. A 3-point attempt in the corner by the Owls was off the mark to seal the Eagles’ win.
“We need to get our confidence up. That’s a good confidence-builder right there. We did a good job executing at the very end and played some good defense. That builds our confidence most definitely for district time.”
