Mr. Doyle Clinton Lawhon passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at the age of 94. Doyle was born July 14, 1925 at Beukiss, Williamson County, the son of Clint Walker Lawhon and Mary Eva Lawhon.
He was a graduate of Pleasanton High School, Class of 1942 where he excelled at all sports. Doyle was awarded a scholarship to attended Schreiner University, Kerrville where he studied until he joined the United States Merchant Marine for service in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea during World War II. His service in the Merchant Marine continued during the Korean Conflict.
After returning to Texas, Doyle served in the Fire Department for 32.5 years, first in Austin and later in San Antonio retiring in 1987. During this time and later in retirement, he was a successful rancher and real estate investor, owning and operating various cattle operations in South Texas.
Preceding Doyle in death were his mother and father; his brothers, Zane, and Haron; his sisters, Bernice and Ima Jean; his wife, Audrey La Quita; and daughter, Brenda Sue. He is survived by one son.
During his life, Doyle was a faithful member of 65 years of the Masonic Lodge in Pleasanton as well as the Eastern Star. In 2008, he was honored with the Golden Trowel Award. During the time he was active in ranching, Doyle served for 18 years as a Director of the McCoy Water Supply Corporation until 2003. In 1995, he was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Doyle was also active in other conservation and land improvement efforts in Atascosa County and was recognized in 1998 as a Resident Conservation Rancher by the Atascosa County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Known for his generosity and interest in education, Doyle assisted several young people in Atascosa County with scholarships to defray the cost of college. Schreiner University honored him as an ex-student by electing him to the Schreiner Oaks Society for his establishment of the Doyle C. Lawhon Endowed Fund in 2015. The Lawhon Endowed Fund was created by Doyle to award deserving students attending Schreiner with scholarships.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 3 at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Pleasanton Cemetery following the service.
