Douglas Travis Ray, age 42, of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away October 7, 2016 accidentally while snorkeling on vacation in Belize, one of his favorite vacation spots.
Travis is survived by his parents, John and Jackie Ray of Charlotte; his younger brother, Josh Ray and wife Haley, and their daughter Paige of New Braunfels. He also leaves behind a large extended family of Schrutkas and Russells, as well as co-workers and friends, including his friend Neal Morris, who was with him on the trip.
Travis was born on November 13, 1973 in Victoria and graduated from Charlotte High School in 1992. He joined the U.S. Army and served his tour of duty at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina with the 82nd Airborne.
He returned home and worked with security systems in Austin, then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked until his death. Travis loved to travel, and enjoyed adventures from backpacking in the mountains in grizzly bear country, to fishing in Montana, or ziplining and snorkeling in Costa Rica and Belize. Travis danced in his earthly life, and he is now dancing on the streets of gold with his Lord and Savior, his two grandfathers who he never had the chance to meet, and his beloved Mamaw Ray andMudder Schrutka, whom he adored. There is a line in an old song that says Ive got more to go to Heaven for than I did yesterday – Theres another angel in the choir and I want to hear him sing. What a comforting thought of being with Jesus and loved ones. It is a beautiful picture of what Heaven promises to be.
Funeral services for Travis will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton on Thursday, October 20, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Charlotte City Cemetery in Charlotte, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Charlotte, PO Box 577, Charlotte, Texas 78011.
