Domestic disturbance call ends in shooting

Officers with the Pleasanton Police Department and Atascosa County EMS first responders responded to a domestic disturbance call on Trade Street Sunday afternoon where Gregory Mendez allegedly assaulted a young boy, his mother and his sister. Officers and the Texas Rangers were still on scene well after 9 p.m. Mendez was taken to University Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and then booked into the Atascosa County Jail. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, officers of the Pleasanton Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of Trade Street for a report of a disturbance between a mother and son. Upon arrival Officers of the Pleasanton Police Department determined 36-year-old Gregory Mendez of Pleasanton had allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old boy and his own mother.

Officers were advised that Mendez had left the residence. A search of the area was conducted by Pleasanton PD and they were unable to locate Mendez.

At approximately 4:18 p.m., the Pleasanton Police Department received a second call for the 600 block of Trade Street for alleged reports that Mendez returned and was throwing knives at his sister. A Pleasanton PD officer, who was completing the report for the first call, was close by and proceeded to the residence arriving within a minute of the call.

Upon arrival, the officer was able to locate Mendez in the back yard hiding beside a shed. Mendez was given commands to get on the ground, but allegedly ignored them. Refusing commands, Mendez allegedly reached for a sledge hammer and raised it in a striking motion. The officer deployed his taser toward Mendez which was ineffective. Mendez continued to refuse the officer’s commands and ran behind the shed. The officer, attempting to keep visual of Mendez, ran parallel along the front of the shed. Once in visual, Mendez allegedly began running towards the officer with the sledge hammer. At this point, the officer was forced to use deadly force and discharged his firearm one time towards Mendez, who was struck in the lower abdomen.

Pleasanton PD officers administered first aid to Mendez until he could be seen by Atascosa County EMS. Mendez was transported to University Hospital where he was attended to until he was booked into the Atascosa County Jail.

Mendez faces alleged charges of Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon Against Peace Officer, Aggravated Assault with Deadly weapon, Injury to Elderly and Injury to Child.

The Texas Rangers are assisting the Pleasanton Police Department with this Criminal Investigation and the Investigation is still ongoing.
