Debate to be settled

On Sunday, Feb. 7, we’ll finally get to settle the debate surrounding whether Texas or California is better at football.

When the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers meet for Super Bowl LV, it will pit Patrick Mahomes (Whitehouse, Tex.) and Tom Brady (San Mateo, Calif.) against each other for the fifth time. Each quarterback has led their team to victory twice and both of Brady’s wins came with the New England Patriots.

It’s a rematch of the team’s Nov. 29 meeting in which Kansas City won 27-24 at Tampa Bay. Mahomes was a sublime 37-of-49 passing for 462 yards and three touchdowns. Brady was 27- of-41 for 345 yards and three touchdowns. The difference in the game were the two interceptions Brady threw.

Mahomes, a product of Texas Tech University, has flourished in Kansas City’s offense once again this season with 4,740 yards passing and 38 touchdowns.

Brady, a University of Michigan graduate, has beaten Father Time once again. The 43-year-old QB is in his first year at Tampa Bay after spending 20 years at New England with Bill Belichick.

The last time the two faces of the NFL faced off in the playoffs was in the 2019 AFC Conference Championship. Brady and New England prevailed 37-31 in overtime before going on to win 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII in the most boring game in the history of the Super Bowl.

Expect those fireworks from 2019 to reignite. The oddsmakers in Las Vegas have Kansas City as a 3.5-point favorite in this game and it could be that close of a game considering Brady and Mahomes each have an arsenal of weapons.

Kansas City used those weapons to carve the Buffalo Bills’ defense in Sunday’s 38-24 win in the AFC Championship. Tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill each surpassed the 100-yard mark in the win.

Mahomes was sacked just once. Getting pressure on Mahomes will be the main focus for Tampa Bay and they can do it.

In the Bucs’ 31-26 win over Green Bay for the NFC title, Tampa Bay sacked Aaron Rodgers five times.

No matter what, expect this Super Bowl to be a slugfest.
