The sauerkraut is almost ready, kolaches are being baked, and the Markmann Polkateers are gearing up to play lots of polka music while visitors enjoy a fabulous Czech meal. That could only mean one thing: CZECH DAY! Yes, indeed, St. Matthew Catholic Church in Jourdanton will hold its annual Czech Day Celebration on Sunday, July 15, at the church and parish hall.

The celebration begins with Mass at 11 a.m. St. Matthew’s pastor, Fr. Kazimierz Oleksy, will be the celebrant for the Mass.

After Mass, an authentic Czech meal – including sausage, Czech potatoes, homemade sauerkraut (homemade by St. Matthew’s parishioners), green beans, peaches, dessert, and tea – will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or so). The cost is $9 per plate. Czech music will be played throughout the meal by the Markmann Polkateers. Before you sit down to enjoy the delicious meal and wonderful music, be sure to pick up your homemade kolaches which will be sold by the local Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (The KJZT) – St. Rosalie Society #75. Also, homemade “ready to eat” sauerkraut will be sold after the meal has been served.

Finally, a raffle sponsored by the local Catholic Union of Texas (The KJT) – St. Jerome Society #87 will be held. Top prize is a $500 VISA gift card. Other prizes include a $200 VISA gift card, framed “Prayer of St. Francis” cross stitch, a Fredericksburg Farm Variety gift basket, a $100 VISA gift card, three $100 Walmart gift cards, a $50 Walmart gift card and a $40 H-E-B gift card.

All proceeds from this Czech Day Celebration will benefit St. Matthew’s Building Fund. Come join us as we celebrate Czech heritage in faith, food, music, and fun. “Vítáme Vás!” (“Welcome!”)
