Delisa Rodriguez, 20, is in serious condition after a head-on crash that also involved two Border Patrol agents.
Rodriguez, of Poteet, was traveling northbound on SH 16 last Wednesday, September 5, when she was trying to pass an 18-wheeler on the left side near the Atascosa County River bridge, about two miles south of Poteet.
According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Jeffrey Denham, she clipped the 18-wheeler and the tires on the trailer. This sent her straight into the lane of the northbound Border Patrol unit. Agents Reynaldo Almaguer and Carlos Hernandez escaped with minor injuries.
Rodriguez was taken by AirLife to University Hospital with life threatening injuries after Jaws of Life released her from the wreckage. According to friends, she has already had three surgeries to repair her spleen, liver and ankles. She also suffered a broken leg, knee cap, ribs and both lungs had collapsed. She is still in ICU but will hopefully move to a regular room at the end of the week. Though she is doing well, a long recovery is expected.
Rodriguez will be cited with Passing to the Left Without Safety.
