A 28-year old man identified as Derrick Sean Sherwood has been charged with murder after a manhunt that led to his arrest in Live Oak County for the alleged double homicide of his parents in Leming.

Deputies from the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 100-block of Maravillas Drive north of Leming, at around 3 a.m. Sunday morning to investigate a report of a double homicide.

According to Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward, both victims, identified as Michael Sherwood, age 60 and Rene Sherwood, age 56, were discovered by one of their sons. According to the investigation both victims had each been shot once.

Sheriff Soward said Sherwood was reported missing along with the victims’ 2015 gray Volkswagen Jetta. Shortly after 6 a.m., CID investigators learned that the vehicle may be in far southeast Atascosa County.

Deputies located the vehicle on the side of FM 99 in Atascosa County at 6:50 a.m. While authorities attempted to make contact with the driver, Sherwood allegedly fled in the vehicle and a pursuit followed into Live Oak County, according to the report. The vehicle crashed into a fence on County Road 245 and the suspect fled on foot.

A 10-hour manhunt ensued involving approximately 60 officers from the ACSO, Live Oak County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife, McMullen County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety. A DPS SWAT and a Texas Ranger SRT team along with DPS aircraft were deployed to the scene. Tracking Dogs from McMullen County and from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice were sent to the scene of the crash.

A DPS aircraft spotted the suspect about a mile away in a creek. A DPS SWAT team moved in and made the arrest without incident at around 5 p.m.

Two pistols were recovered from the vehicle Sherwood was driving and authorities believe one of them to be the weapon used in the homicides.

Sergeant Gavin Lindsay along with other CID investigators and Texas Rangers are investigating the case. According to Soward, Sherwood made a statement to a Texas Ranger and a sheriff’s investigator.

Capital murder charges were filed Monday afternoon on Sherwood. Soward said a warrant was issued for evading arrest with a motor vehicle earlier in the day.

A $1,000,000 bond was set on Sherwood by Atascosa Justice of the Peace Felix Herrera III

This marks three homicides in Atascosa County within the first month of 2023.
