Atascosa County Sergeant Investigator Max Peralta didn’t waste anytime tracking down a brand new stolen John Deere tractor recently. The Tractor along with a John Deere riding mower, three saddles, a welder and other items valued at over $37,000 were taken sometime Friday night, June 1, from a farm on County Road 307 north of Charlotte. Deputy George Lopez responded to the scene to investigate and was assisted by Sergeant John Rothenbach.
CID Sergeant Peralta was assigned to the case and began following up on leads. Sergeant Peralta identified a suspect who resided in Wilson County that was seen near the scene of the crime on the evening of June 1st. Sergeant Peralta and Sergeant Investigator Wayne Stratton traveled to Wilson County on three successive days before locating the stolen tractor valued at $26,000.
The investigators also executed a search warrant at a residence in Floresville looking for stolen property from the case. Late last week, Sgt. Peralta obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect. Sgt. Peralta then located one of the stolen saddles in a pawn shop in San Antonio that had allegedly been pawned by the suspect.
The suspect, Gary L. Lanford, 34, 601 Walnut Street, Floresville, was arrested Saturday by DPS Trooper T. Greebon on Old Pleasanton Road in Atascosa County. Lanford was booked into the Atascosa County Jail charged with Theft over $20,000. Bond on Lanford was set at $250,000 by Justice of the Peace Jackie Bodden.
He remains in the Atascosa County jail in lieu of bond, stated Chief Deputy David Soward. Soward stated the investigation is still ongoing as to if any other suspects are involved.
