County planning disaster exercise

Citizen Volunteers Needed

Atascosa County Emergency Management is planning a county wide disaster exercise and activation of our Cowboy Fellowship POD site on February 4.

POD stands for “Point of Distribution.” The exercise scenario would be: IF Anthrax was dispersed over a three day period at the San Antonio Livestock show, a large number of our citizens would be exposed and antibiotics would need to be distributed to them.

This is an exercise to see how we will handle large scale disaster and find out what we need to improve at our secondary POD site. As emergency planners say, “it’s not if it’s when.”

In an actual event the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and our State Health Department would distribute medicine over 48 hour period to all affected POD sites. Residents would be instructed to drive to their local POD sites to receive medication. In Atascosa County the POD sites are located at the Strawberry Festival Grounds and Cowboy Fellowship Church.

Last year’s exercise was a success because of our community support and involvement. We will need citizens to pretend to pick-up medicine for their family members from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cowboy Fellowship Church. You will need to be able to fill out a form and walk through the distribution process. I hope you can help us again this year.
