Copper thefts yield arrest by Sheriff’s office

In early February, Atascosa County Sheriff’s Investigators began investigating two separate copper thefts at a residence on Sand Branch Road. A game camera that the property owner put up for security purposes provided investigators a description of a black jeep and two suspects.

A few days later, sheriff’s investigators staked out the area looking for the black jeep. Investigators spotted a black jeep matching the description on FM 2504 and conducted a traffic stop.

The occupants of the jeep were questioned by investigators and then allegedly confessed to the copper thefts.

Ronnie Gutierrez, 18, of Atascosa County was arrested and charged with two counts of Theft of Copper. His bond was set at $10,000 on each count on the felony charges.

Sheriff David Soward stated that although the number of copper thefts has declined recently, it still remains to be a reoccurring problem.

Captain Investigator Matthew Miller, Lieutenant Max Peralta, Sergeant Investigator Joseph Manguso and deputies Ozzie Guerra and Kevin Draughn participated in the investigation.
