On Monday, November 12, Charlotte High School participated in the 15th Student Legislative Session coordinated by State Representative Ryan Guillen of District 31 at the Texas House of Representatives in Austin.

Students from Atascosa, Brooks and Duval County were given the chance to see what it is like to be either a state representative, lobbyist or a journalist for the Texas Government.

Charlotte students who participated were Lucy Benavides, Brandon Sanchez, Jesse Cantu, Manuel Duran, Rhianna Bautista and Marizza Sherwood. They received a Bill that they had to try to get passed in the House and the Senate. They were successfully able to pass their bill which increased privacy for drivers in Texas.

Manuel Duran had an important role of being a journalist and his article was selected to be published by Representative Guillen.

Luis Lopez, the CHS sponsor, commended his team for their performance at their session, “Rhianna, Brandon, Jesse and Lucy all defended their legislative bill in front of schools across Texas. Marizza was chosen as the Republican Whip in the Senate and Manuel, who played the journalist, was chosen to publish his article on the Session’s main web page for all to see.”

“Mr. Lopez has done a fantastic job preparing our students for the real world,” said Anna Maydon. “We both couldn’t be prouder of our six representatives from Charlotte.”
