The Atascosa County Child Welfare Board, like many others, faced a decline in donations due to social gathering restrictions this year.

COVID-19 concerns caused them to cancel their spring Kicks for Kids kickball fundraiser and their fall Christmas Craft Show.

“We are grateful for San Miguel’s charitable giving program because it still allowed us to provide back-to-school shoes for our local foster children,” said Jessica Tom, board president. Earlier this year, San Miguel donated $1,000 towards their back-toschool drive.

ACCWB partners with Hibbet Sports each year to purchase name brand shoes at an affordable price.

“This year, we saw an increase in the number of children in the system and needed to purchase 64 pairs of shoes,” stated Tom.

The ACCWB is also thankful for the many donations made to help supply backpacks and school supplies for kids to start the year. Special thanks to Cowboy Fellowship for providing a large amount of needed school supplies.

As the holidays draw close, you can still help

ACCWB provide holiday gifts for local foster children. Currently, there are Angel Trees placed at businesses around the community.

Simply take an angel from the tree, purchase gifts from the suggested list on the angel and return the angel and unwrapped gifts to the location where you picked up the angel. These gifts are due back by Dec. 5.

Angel Trees can be found at the following locations and ACCWB appreciates their continued support:

Pleasanton Athletic Center, Café Chris, Cancun Mexican Restaurant- Pleasanton, Chile Bandera, Fantastic Sam’s, East Coast Wings & Grill, Farm Bureau, First Commercial Bank, Jourdanton Library, Jourdanton High School, Legacy Cheernastics, Nest Feathers, Pleasanton Library, Poteet High School, Price Chevrolet, Shears and South Texas Nutrition.

Currently, there are 149 children in subcare and 37 awaiting adoption. If you are interested in becoming a foster or adoption home, visit www.adoptchildren.org.
