On April 7, Associate Judge Melissa DeGerolami signed the proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.
It states that Atascosa County prides itself on giving back to the community, contributing to the quality of life among our citizens.
CASA of South Texas, in association with Texas CASA, the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association, Atascosa County Child Protective Services and the Children’s Alliance- A Child Advocacy Center, speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are involved in the juvenile courts.
Approximately 101 children in Atascosa County suffer from some form of confirmed abuse or neglect each year. Through a national effort, Atascosa County community members are encouraged to join together to raise awareness for those children fallen victim to abuse and neglect throughout the month of April.
This effort will give abused and neglected children in our community and around the country, a chance for a safe and positive future.
Below are statewide statistics that highlight child abuse and neglect as an ongoing epidemic that has a lasting negative impact on the victims, our society and our economy.
