Charlotte Trojanettes took quick advantage in their playoff series with a good Sabinal team, winning in two games in the Class AA regional quarterfinals. The Charlotte wins were by scores of 7-6 and 12-9.
These games were played at Incarnate Word University Softball Field. Charlotte won, 7-6, Friday, May 10, and took the second and decisive game win, 12-9, Saturday.
The Trojanettes will be playing against Weimar in the Class AA regional semifinals, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 16, 17 and 18. Games will be at San Marcos High School. Of course, the Saturday game is contingent on the first two games being split in the two out of three format. Thursday and Friday games will start at 6 p.m. and starting time for Saturday’s game is TBA.
“We knew that Sabinal would put up a fight being ranked 8th in the state. In both games, both teams took advantage of each other’s mistakes,” said Charlotte coach Chris Raimondi.
Coach Raimondi pointed out that Trojanette pitcher Annelise Gaitan had 11 strikeouts in the first game. He said that the Trojanettes held Sabinal scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings which included facing Sabinal’s top of their batting lineup in the seventh.
Charlotte ‘put the game away’ with a three run sixth inning in the Saturday contest.
Trojanettes scored a run on an error in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead into the third inning where, batting first, the Trojanettes scored four runs that were answered by a five run output by Sabinal in the third that left the game tied, 5-5.
CHS scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and saw that 9-4 lead tied up in the fifth inning when Sabinal scored four runs making it 9-9.
In the top of the sixth, Charlotte then took charge with three runs and a 12-9 lead that became the final score.
Annelise Gaitan was the winning pitcher for Charlotte. She allowed seven hits and nine runs, striking out four over seven innings.
Sabinal pitcher Rhianna Lopez took the loss, allowing four hits and 12 runs in seven innings.
Rhianna Bautista, Julissa Cantu, Mercedes Sanchez and Stephanie Ramos each provided one hit to lead the Trojanettes.
