Charles R. Simmons, 84, died September 9 at Stone Oak Hospital in San Antonio. Known to all as Buddy, he will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and loyal friend.
Buddy was born in Freer, on August 25, 1936, the youngest child of Walter and Orpa Duren Simmons. Raised in South Texas, he graduated from Devine High School where he enjoyed playing all sports. He married his high school sweetheart, Rena DuBose of Devine in June 1958. He and Rena had four children. The family lived in the Houston area.
Buddy was an electrical repair technician. He worked with several major companies installing and maintaining elevators in tall buildings during a booming period in Houston. Buddy very much enjoyed coaching his sons’ little league baseball teams to great successes.
After 35 years in Houston, he and Rena “retired” to the family ranch near Jourdanton. There Buddy went into business with his father and began an enjoyable second career as a farmer/ rancher. The couple developed many great friendships in Jourdanton. Buddy supported the Jourdanton United Methodist Church as a board member, and he volunteered to maintain the buildings and helped with the church’s annual fish fry (even though he did not care to eat fish).
Buddy and Rena celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. In addition to Rena, he is survived by his daughter Kathleen, his sons Kurt, Kennon (and spouse Sandra) and Kerry (and spouse Melissa). Other survivors are seven grandchildren, Dicy Chambers, Alex Chambers (and spouse Kelli), Kasy Baldauf (and spouse Tyler), Cody Chambers, Kelly Patton (and spouse Michael), Ashley Simmons and Kias Simmons and one great-grandchild, Jackson Charles Baldauf.
Buddy truly loved nature and Texas, its rich lands, its lakes and rivers, its fields of flowers, its floating clouds, its starry nights. He will be missed by all.
Graveside services were conducted at Jourdanton City Cemetery on Tuesday, September 15, at 11 a.m.
