Charles “Chuck” Robert Oelkers passed away October 8, 2020, at the age of 86. He was born on March 20, 1934, in San Antonio to Bruno C. and Frankie Mae (Henderson) Oelkers.
Chuck worked for his grandparents’ grocery store and grew up between the store and his grandparents’ ranch in Sisterdale. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. He had several careers in his youth including a US Marine, a former DPS Trooper, a police chief and an Institutionalized food salesman for the Red and White Grocery store in San Antonio. After his parents died tragically in a car accident, Chuck assumed the Oelkers Ranch and became a full-time rancher.
Chuck met and married the love of his life, Ms. Aileene Ehninger in 1970. They spent 50 wonderful years together before his passing. Together they raised seven children between them.
After several health issues, his doctor told him he could no longer take care of goats, horses, throw hay or ranch, so he told his wife, “Mama, find us a place, with a place that I can fish.” Aileene spent the next six months looking at places before they ended up settling here in Pleasanton. He was the man that always made you smile, and he lived his life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed.
Some awards and achievements obtained by Chuck were: Alamo Gun Slingers City Quick Draw Tournament – 1st Place – 1959; State Quick Draw Tournament Houston – 2nd Place – 1960; Law Enforcement Award in Recognition of Outstanding Law Enforcement Service Terrell Hills Police Department – 1962; Pool Tournament Waco – 1st Place – 1973.
One of Chuck’s favorite quotes was by author Louis L’Amore – “A man is born beside the road to death. To die is not so much, it is inevitable. The journey is what matters and what one does along the way. And it’s not that he succeeds or fails, only that he lived proudly with honor and respect. Then he can die proudly.”
Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Aileene Oelkers; children, Cindy (Dwayne) Vaughan and Robert (Letha) Oelkers; stepchildren, Diana (Billy) Hindt, Richard Ehninger, Eric (Neamat) Ehninger, Robert Ehninger and David (Theresa) Ehninger; grandchildren, Samantha Merideth, Geanie Rupel, Kim Vaughan, Dwayne (Jessica) Vaughan, Hollie (Beau) Brown, Robin Oelkers and Shelby Oelkers; stepgrandchildren, Genny Dixon, Garrent (Amanda) Hindt, Catherine Harris, Monty Ehninger, Stephanie Wickerham, Michael Ehninger, Daniel Ehninger, Natalie (Justin) Charbonnet, Blair Ehninger, Blake (Clare) Ehninger, Sarah Ehninger, Jacob Ehninger and Courtney (Adam) Reshkobsky; great-grandchildren, Colton Merideth, Evelyn Merideth, Devin Vaughan, Justin Vaughan, Annabelle Vaughan, Bryson Brown, Beckett Brown, Beringer Brown, Hazel Brown and Hattie Brown; step great-grandchildren, Kayla (Wes) Mason, Addison Haight, Brooks Haight, Curtis Harris, Cyana Harris, Ava Wickerham, Isla Charbonnet, George Charbonnet, Lawson Ehninger, Orion Ehninger, Lite Ehninger and Honor Reshkobsky.
