CHARLES DEAN

Charles Robert (Bob) Dean passed into the presence of the Lord on February 13, 2021, at the age of 81. He was born on April 1, 1939, in Seguin, to the late Johnny and Ruby Brown Dean. Bob was the second oldest of seven children and was known throughout his lifetime as Bobby or Bob.

When he was 10 years old, he moved from Seguin with his parents to Macdona, and then on to San Antonio. He attended school in the Harlandale School District. Upon completion of the 11th grade, he joined the Navy. He was a gunner’s mate on the USS Hyman DD732. Bob was on the ship the entire two years of his service and he was proud to have served in that capacity. He lost part of his hearing during this time on the guns. His first tour took him to Kingston, Jamaica; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tahiti; Guantanamo Bay and Cuba. His second tour took him to Balboa Spain; Istanbul, Turkey; Suez Canal, Port Suez and the French Somaliland in the Horn of Africa. His third tour took him to Naples, Italy; Bergen, Norway; Hamburg, Germany and Glasgow, Scotland. Bob served from 1957 to 1959 and then spent the following two years in the Naval Reserves. After serving his time in the Navy he obtained his GED from San Antonio College.

They celebrated 60 years of marriage in December of 2020. Bob and Sue had two sons, and when the boys were young, they moved to Fowlerton so Bob could take a job with his brother-in-law, Frank Franklin, who was the commissioner for LaSalle County. A year later he went to work in the oilfield for Southland Drilling Co., and was with them about seven years. Then the next 29 years he worked for Dowell/Schlumberger. Bob was known as the Silver Fox throughout the oilfield, due to his gray hair. He retired in 1998 and came home to raise tomatoes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jourdanton, where he served in many areas.

He was Sunday school director, Sunday school teacher, part of the activity committee, choir, Angel Tree, Operation Christmas Child, Bible school and Men’s Group. Bob loved the Lord, his family, his dogs, his church family and friends. He loved supporting Wings of Eagles to help bring the Jewish people back to Israel.
