Census begins this month

Invitations to be sent out March 12-20

Residents will be receiving their initial invitations March 12-20 to respond to the 2020 Census which will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. This year, residents may complete their census information online and by phone.

Areas that are perhaps less likely to respond online will receive a paper questionnaire along with the invitation to respond online or over the phone.

It is very important that everyone is counted. The count impacts the federal funds that communities receive for the next 10 years. These funds provide services that benefit children such as Head Start, special education, school lunch assistance and children’s health insurance.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about one million children under the age of five were missed in the last census. Young children who may be at risk of not being counted are those who live with large extended families or multiple families living under one roof.

Educators can help by teaching children about the importance of counting every child who lives in their household. There are resources available on the Census Bureau website at www.census. gov/programs-surveys/ sis/2020census/2020- resource/pre-k/story-andactivity book.html.
