Catherine Hooge

Catherine Jane Hooge, 94, passed away on September 18, 2016. With her passing went one of the most animated, stylish, and loving ladies ever.

Kay, as she was known to family and friends, was born on December 4, 1921, in Hartford, Illinois to Harvey and Margaret Edwards. During World War II she joined the war efforts of The Greatest Generation by working in a munitions factory.

Shortly after the war ended, she came to Newport News, VA to visit her sister, Donna, and brother-in-law, Robert, who had just returned home from the European front. Visiting at the same time was Paul Hooge, fellow crew member on Robert’s B-17 bomber. It was love at first sight for Kay and Paul.

After a whirlwind romance, Paul and Kay were married on January 1, 1945. They moved to Poteet, Texas and later settled in San Antonio, where they spent the next 63 years. They loved to travel and visited Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Kay loved to entertain and was an avid gardener, cook, reader, and bridge player. She was a Life Master in the Duplicate Bridge Association.

After her husband died in 2008, Kay moved to Norfolk, VA to live in Harbor’s Edge Retirement Community. Her surviving family includes daughters Sandra Fewell and Paula Yarosh. Other beloved family members are sons-in-law Dennis Fewell and Bob Yarosh; granddaughters Nicole Nelson (and husband Steve) and Micha Wessel; and great-grandchildren Miles and Zoe Nelson.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Catherine’s name at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, VA 23501-2156 or online at CHKD.org
