The Atascosa County Courthouse will soon see a start of a busy summer with a capital murder case set to start on August 1 and a few murder trials set to begin as early as next month.
Shawn Ruiz Puente and Jenevieve Ramos were charged with the capital murder of San Antonio Police Officer Robert Deckard. Deckard was in pursuit of the pair during a highway chase from Bexar County that crossed over the Atascosa County line when he was shot. After 13 days in the intensive care unit at San Antonio Military Medical Center, Deckard passed away in December 2013. Puente’s trial is possibly the first since 1996 to carry a possible death penalty in Atascosa County.
The following cases have a pre-trial docket call on Wednesday, May 24 and a trial date of Monday, June 12:

•Joe Anthony Perez, Murder; Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon causing injury/death
•John Bryan Finch, Murder; Man Del CS PG 1 >=1G<4G; Man Del CS PG 1 >=4G<200G; Unl Poss Firearm by Felon
In other case news, Guadalupe Romo is set to appear on Wednesday, May 24 to face a charge of injury to a child/elderly/disabled. Two cases with charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child will be heard on Wednesday, June 28. Charged in those separate cases are Benjamin Gallegos Jr. and Juan Tijerina Jr.
