The Pleasanton City Council approved unanimously the grant application and subsequent funding for the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, as it relates to the “Turn and Burn” on March 22 and 23. Funding will be allocated from the Hotel/Motel tax for the fiscal year 2013 in the amount of $29,850.
This year’s event features an all-star line-up. Friday’s performers will be Joe Guerra and Rick Trevino. On Saturday, Scott Wiggins, Rodney Hayden and the Bellamy Brothers will perform.
Chico Cox of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce explained it began two years ago as a barbecue cook-off, team roping and dance. The first year there were 19 teams. Last year there were about 60 teams. They are estimating over 100 teams this year, as the event is growing. They have partnered with WW Wood, which is one of their sponsors. They are working with the state to turn this into a state championship. If they get this, it will become a national event because the cookers will then qualify for the national championship. People travel thousands of miles and out of state to attend these events.
“This is going to turn into something that will bring in quite a few people… you talk about heads in beds. It is turning into a very large event, “ said Cox. Along with local newspapers and radio, they are also promoting it through social media. “It is growing as we speak. The response has been astonishing,” said Cox.
