Immunizations protect society. Without immunizations many people would become ill and some may die. Epidemics could affect society as a whole, since people are mobile. Some illnesses such as mumps and chickenpox are considered minor childhood events yet may cause major complications. Why should one suffer from an illness that is preventable?

People often worry that a vaccine will make them sick. Vaccines work by causing the body’s immune system to create antibodies for the particular infection. In the future the immune system will recognize and prevent the infection. All children and adults should be current on their immunizations. Illnesses that may be prevented by immunizations are: Hepatitis B, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Chickenpox, Mumps, Measles, Rotavirus, Pneumonia, Flu and Human Papilloma Virus.

Twenty- six people have died this year due to complications of the flu. According to the Texas Department of Health Services, 3,977 people suffered from Pertussis and five died. In the United States 79 million Americans mostly in their teens and late 20’s are infected with HPV—about 14 million are infected yearly. Needlessly many people suffered from illnesses that could have been prevented. Check with your health professional to review your immunization record.

Jourdanton FCCLA realizes the importance of up-to-date immunizations. Members have worked to get the word out, “Don’t Wait Vaccinate.” Members created pamphlets, Don’t Wait Vaccinate, Flu, and HPV. These informative brochures helped educate our community about the need for action. A poster contest among the JHS student body will assist in spreading the word.
