A Tuesday afternoon accident claimed one life and sent another to the hospital with injuries.
Dustin Welch, 18, of San Antonio and his female cousin (name not released) 25, were involved in an ATV accident on a private ranch five miles south of Jourdanton off SH 16.
It appeared that Welch was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve on a muddy ranch road. The ATV rolled over and landed on the driver.
His cousin, was thrown from the ATV and was injured. She walked a half mile to contact the ranch owner’s son to report the accident. She was treated at the scene and then AirLifed to University Hospital.
Welch was pronounced dead at the scene by JP 3 Orlando Carrasco and was transported to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office by Hurley Funeral Home.
The accident was investigated by Atascosa County Sheriff’s CID investigators and were assisted at the scene by DPS Troopers, Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies and Jourdanton Police Officers.
“These types of ATV’s are typically safe to operate, but are not toys. They must be operated safely. I can’t reiterate that enough,” said David Soward, Chief Deputy Sheriff and Chief Investigator for Atascosa County.
